*UPDATE: Doncaster Mile winner and odds-on favourite for tomorrow’s showdown Rangirangdoo has been scratched from the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
A nine-horse final field of top runners has been announced for this Saturday’s $350,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick racecourse.
One of four great Group 1 races at the meeting on Saturday, the 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is shaping up to be an intense and exhilarating battle both on the field and in the betting ring, as some of the country’s best gallopers face off in one of Sydney’s final autumn features.
The hot pre-race favourite at $2.35 with Ladbrokes.com.au is last start winner of the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) Rangirangdoo. The talented Chris Waller-trained Pentire geldings is yet to win over 1600m but did run a strong second to Theseo two starts back over 2000m in the Ranvet Stakes and will be determined to do one better on Saturday.
Rangirangdoo has drawn wide with barrier eight on Saturday and will again be ridden by in-form hoop Nash Rawiller who was aboard for the Doncaster win after a week long battle in court.
The wide draw should be no hindrance to the five-year-old as recent rain will have softened the inside running.
Second elect in the betting markets at $4.40 with Ladbrokes.com.au is three-year-old High Chaparral colt Monaco Consul. Coming off a gallant third to Shoot Out in the AJC Derby (2400m) last start, the Michael Moroney-trained runner has drawn on the far outside with barrier nine and will have Jay Ford aboard.
Other horses set to contest the 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes include Anthony Cumming’s last start Doncaster Mile runner-up Road To Rock (barrier two) looking to turn the tables on Rangirangdoo on Saturday, the Lee Freedman-trained import Doctor Fremantle (barrier one), and Encosta De Lago mare Palacio De Cristal (barrier four) out to prove her ability as a stayer.
Anthony Cummings will also be represented by Triple Honour starting from barrier five, another one of the six Queen Elizabeth Stakes contenders backing up a run in the Doncaster Mile last Saturday.
The premier race of the day is the $400,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) featuring a wide open field of 12 great stayers. Other big events will be the $300,000 Group 1 Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds, the $300,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) and the $150,000 Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1600m).
The 2010 Sydney City Lexus Queen Elizabeth Stakes is programmed as race five on the day’s cracker eight-event card and is due to commence at 2:55pm.
