Trainer Peter Moody is hopeful that history will work in Manighar’s favour in today’s 2013 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Manighar will be taking on red hot favourite It’s A Dundeel in the 2013 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, however, the past warns that it will be a tough ask for the fancied galloper.
Just one three-year-old has won the race since its inception, providing It’s A Dundeel with a tough task in today’s ten furlong event.
Moody feels that Manighar could be the one to dethrone It’s A Dundeel, who has been so strong against his own age during the autumn racing carnival.
“It’s A Dundeel looks outstanding, he looks super, and obviously he will be hard to beat,” Moody said.
“But three-year-olds don’t have a great record in this race – only one has won (Intergaze, 1997) in nearly 70 years – so that gives us some hope.”
Manighar placed a fast finishing fourth in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill Gardens last start.
Moody feels that the run marked a return to form for the seven-year-old, who was at his best during last year’s autumn carnival when he won three Group 1 races.
“I thought his Ryder run was just about a career-best effort,” Moody said.
“It has probably been a fitness issue with him but he’s right at his top now.
“We also re-jigged his training a little and he has certainly turned the corner.”
