2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Nominations Released

April 11th, 2014

Figuring as the major target for many runners over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) has attracted a particularly classy list of 68 hopefuls for the $4 million event on April 19th.

One of the standout performers of the 2014 autumn racing season so far, New Zealand raider Silent Achiever has been included in nominations for both the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on the same Royal Randwick race card.

Unbeaten in four starts this preparation alone, Silent Achiever has without doubt hit career best form in 2014; winning the Retina Specialists Handicap Open (1500m) first-up before strolling home to win the Group 1 New Zealand Stakes (2000m) prior to crossing the ditch.

While not expected to figure in contention in the dying stages of the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) in her maiden Australian tilt this time in, the O’reilly mare displayed a strong turn of foot to catch and overcome Her Majesty The Queen-owned Carlton House to finish a nose in the clear.

Offered the ideal barrier 4 for the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) on April 5th, Silent Achiever recorded a close-to-perfect run; breaking well and settling on the heels of the early leaders before moving clear and register her third consecutive win at the highest level of racing.

Also featuring in nominations for the 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is Boban; winner of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) this time in.

Boban was without doubt the performer of the 2013 spring, claiming a perfect five wins from as many starts including the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

While un-convincing over his first two starts this preparation, the talented Bernardini gelding returned to form with a scintillating run in the Chipping Norton upon regular jockey Glyn Schofield’s return to the saddle.

Unable to handle the late pace of Gordon Lord Byron and seventh in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) most recently, trainer Chris Waller has elected to run Boban in this weekend’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Australian Derby day as a final preparation for April 19th’s major.

Arguably hitting career best form this preparation, Anthony Cummings-trained Thunder Fantasy has been included in nominations for the 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

While yet to break through for a maiden Group 1 victory, Thunder Fantasy has been one of the more consistent performers of the 2014 autumn carnival thus far; claiming the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) first-up before producing a typically strong final straight sprint to finish an impressive third behind fellow Queen Elizabeth Stakes nominee Shamus Award in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 1st.

Hitting peak condition when second behind Criterion in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last time out, Cummings is confident the Lucky Owners colt is on the verge of breaking through for a maiden win at the highest level of Australian racing, and is excited by his chances in the 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

With leading chance Fiorente forced to retire earlier this week after sustaining a severe tendon injury, betting markets for the 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes have already been blown wide open, with Carlton House now outright favourite for success.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Queen Elizabeth Stakes is due to be released on Tuesday, April 15th.
