Happy Trails Primed for 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes

April 8th, 2015

Trainer Paul Beshara has been thrilled with the condition of three-time Group 1 winner Happy Trails this season and is confident he is more than a chance for success in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick, as long as the track is not rain-soaked.

Happy Trails has steadily built to the task this season but found a bog of a track at Randwick on Monday when lining up for the featured Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), and as a result was unable to match the late pace of winner Kermadec; finishing 12th.

Revealing he was sure the Good Journey would not perform to a high standard on Monday, Beshara told Racing Ahead his runner will have no issue backing-up and is confident he will be right in the finish, should the Randwick track dry out.

“We knew he’d go no good, the track was too wet!” Beshara said of the Doncaster Mile.

“I just wanted him to go round to get the run under his belt.

“It won’t worry him (backing-up), he came home Monday night and licked his bin clean, he’s eaten all his hay and he’s jumping around. He just doesn’t put in on those wet tracks.

“We had a big, heavy shower yesterday morning but then the sun came out and it hasn’t rained since and we’ve got a really nice wind blowing. I just hope it dries out nice.

“They’ve got the rail out 9 metres and so he’ll be on the outside of the track and he’s drawn nine so he won’t be stuck down on the rail again.

“We’ve been up here four times now and its rained every time.

“He’s cherry ripe. His Australian Cup run was a good run; he ran a good third in that and that was his third run in.”

Posting seven wins and a further sixteen minor place finishes over his 49 career starts so far, Happy Trails arguably found career-best form through the 2013 edition of the Spring Carnival, highlighted by success in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and a close second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Capping his 2014 spring with success in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), Happy Trails ran a credible sixth in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) first-up this time and progressed to second in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) in what was his only other start prior to the Australian Cup.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes odds, for which Happy Trails can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $41 for success.
