Trainer Ed Dunlop has confirmed popular veteran stayer Red Cadeaux will take his place in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships, rather than accept into the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) final field.
A proven performer over two miles, Red Cadeaux returned to Australia at the beginning of autumn with the intention of targeting the Sydney Cup, however recent heavy rainfall over the Randwick track has softened the surface to an ideal consistency for the nine-year-old.
Boasting an impressive $4 million prize purse as oppose to the $1.6 million issued in the Sydney Cup, Dunlop wrote on his blog that owner Ron Arculli was pleased with the new course of action for the Cadeaux Genereux and is confident of a competitive performance.
“After much deliberation between Mr Arculli, Robin, Steve and I, the decision has been made to run Red Cadeaux in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, as opposed to the Sydney Cup, at Randwick on Saturday,” Dunlop wrote.
“The weather has been the overriding factor in our decision, with Sydney having experienced an extremely wet week.
“Although the rain is set to relent in the next few days, Robin and Steve inform me that the track is currently soft.
“This would put a question mark against Red’s stamina over 2 miles while Mr Arculli has never been afraid of a challenge!
“Obviously Contributer and Adelaide will be tough to beat, but the Sydney Cup is a vintage renewal in itself with Protectionist, Who Shot Thebarman and the well-weighted Hartnell in the line-up. Hopefully we have made the right call!!”
A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2012 edition of the Hong Kong Vase (2400m), Red Cadeaux etched his name into Australian racing folklore in 2014 when finishing second in the Melbourne Cup for a record fourth time.
Having placed a credible fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) first-up this time, Red Cadeaux was scratched from the final field of the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) a fortnight ago with a view towards optimal condition this weekend.
