Leading Hong Kong-based hoop Joao Moreira has experienced notable success in Australia on a hit-and-run basis over recent seasons and is confident of continuing the trend aboard talented mare Royal Descent in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2013 edition of the Australian Oaks, Royal Descent has become one of the most unlucky horses currently in work in Australia; having finishing in the minors five times in Group 1 feature races over the last few seasons.
Pleased with the feel offered up by the daughter of Redoute’s Choice when third in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Monday, Moreira told the Daily Telegraph he is confident Royal Descent will respond favourably to the conditions of the 2015 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and will lay a great account for herself amongst the talent-rich field.
“Royal Descent ran a super race in the Doncaster, she didn’t have much luck, she got caught wide, didn’t have any cover yet she finished the race off so strongly,” Moreira said.
“It’s another step up in distance to the 2000m but I think she’ll handle it.
“I honestly believe the 2000m will be even better for her. I just hope we get a good position this time and she can finish the race off like she did Monday.
“It’s a strong race with horses like Criterion and Contributer but I have plenty of faith in mine. If she wasn’t at her best it will only be because she didn’t have enough time to back up.
“I have a lot of faith in Chris Waller; he always does a top job and will have her at her best on Saturday.”
Posting a commendable total of four wins and a further eleven minor place finishes through her 24 start career, Royal Descent returned to racing in typically scintillating form over the 2014 Spring Carnival; running second in each of the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m), Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) most notably.
Placing seventh in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) first-up this time, Royal Descent placed a credible fourth in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) in her only other start prior to Doncaster Mile.
