96 runners have been included in nominations for the 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m); highlighted by the pending appearance of some of the world’s best racehorses at Royal Randwick on Day 2 of The Championships.
Criterion produced arguably a career-best performance to date to take out last year’s edition of the major Autumn Carnival race and has been included in 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes nominations.
Criterion has been a strong and consistent performer through his entire 33 start career since first appearing on course in 2012; posting seven wins and thirteen minors highlighted by four Group 1 triumphs.
Capping a strong three-year-old campaign with consecutive wins in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) in 2014, the Sebring entire returned last year in career-best form; running third in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and second in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) before delivering a talented field a resounding defeat in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
Producing a number of commendable performances in a trip abroad including third in the Group 1 QEII Cup (2000m) and fifth in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2011m) at Royal Ascot, Criterion returned in spring for success in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).
Running second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), Criterion placed a particularly impressive third in his first attempt at two miles in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on November 3rd.
A total of four Japanese horses have been included in 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes nominations including Tosen Reve.
Partnered by leading Australian jockey Hugh Bowman three times for two wins, Tosen Reve has been a standout through his current preparation; winning each of the Andromeda Stakes (2000m) and December Stakes (2000m) before placing a credible sixth in the Group 1 Arima Kinen (2500m) most recently.
Some of Australia’s standout middle-distance horses have also been included in 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes nominations including Fawkner and Winx.
A four-time Group 1 winner, Fawkner returned to racing in 2015 for success in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 12th; progressing to second in the Underwood Stakes before a luckless run for sixth in the Caulfield Stakes.
Having returned to the paddock after placing a credible sixth in the Cox Plate, the Reset gelding will return in Saturday’s Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
Winx has fast become the stable star for leading trainer Chris Waller and is a three-time Group 1 winner.
Capping a strong 2015 autumn and winter campaign with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), the Street Cry mare returned in spring for success in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) before posting consecutive and dominant wins in each of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Cox Plate.
