Winx is the headliner in the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes field

Champion mare Winx is the headline act in the 2017 field for the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on day two of ‘The Championships’.

Winx has drawn barrier three in the nine horse Queen Elizabeth Stakes field and leading Group 1 winning jockey Hugh Bowman will be in charge of the superstar mare again as she chases her seventeenth straight victory and twelfth Group 1 win in the feature weight for age contest.

Trainer Chris Waller had mapped out a four run Sydney Autumn Carnival campaign and Winx has continued to capture the imagination of race goers with three dynamic wins to date this preparatrion.

Winx kicked off the Autumn Carnival for a first up win in the Group 2 $250,000 The Star Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 13 followed by a victory in the Group 1 $600,000 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on February 25.

The five year old mare then wrapped up her Queen Elizabeth Stakes preparation with a devastating seven and a quarter lengths thrashing of the rest of the field in the Group 1 $1m China Horse Club George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 18.

The John O’Shea trained Hartnell will be taking on Winx again in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes after finishing second to her three starts back in the Apollo Stakes and then eighth behind her in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

Hartnell was then able to secure a spot in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes with a grinding second to Our Ivanhowe in the Group 1 $700,000 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 18.

James Doyle is back aboard Hartnell who has drawn the pole position in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Doncaster Mile runner up Happy Clapper will be lining up for his second Queen Elizabeth Stakes after finishing third behind Lucia Valentina and The United States twelve months ago.

Happy Clapper will jump from barrier five with Blake Shinn in the saddle again after the pair ran second to It’s Somewhat in the Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick last Saturday.

The Robert Hickmott trained The United States has drawn barrier seven with Damien Oliver to ride while Kerrin McEvoy will be aboard Exospheric who will jump from gate two.

Winx dominates the Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au at $1.10 well ahead of her nearest rival Hartnell at $11.
